Abstract
The dependence of the rate of the haemin-catalyzed decomposition of H 2O2 on pH was investigated. The mechanism which accounted for the results was (Equation Presented) Individual rate constants have been calculated: k1 = 3.85 x 102 M-1 min -1; k3 = 2.9min-1. KA was estimated to be ≈10-4 M and k2≈1.3 x 103 min -1. Under comparable conditions haemin is 20 times inferior to Fe3+ ion as a catalyst for the decomposition of H2O 2. The effect has been attributed to the lower value of KA for haemin than for Fe3+ ion.
