Abstract

The phenomenology of pionic atoms is reviewed, highlighting the extraction of the πN σ term from a large-scale fit of strong-interaction level shift and width data across the periodic table. The value thus derived σπN = 57 ± 7 MeV is linked directly to the relatively well known πN isovector scattering amplitude near threshold. It compares well with the value 58 ± 5 MeV derived recently by the Bern-Bonn-Jülich group using Roy-Steiner equations to control the extrapolation of the πN isoscalar scattering amplitude from near threshold to zero pion mass.
