Abstract
It is shown, on the particular case of 2p53p → 2p53s Ne I transitions, how the progress made recently in the theory of atomic spectra can be used for calculating transition probabilities and lifetimes in simple spectra. The main theoritical improvements are: a) introduction of effective operators in the least-squares fit procedure on energy levels for obtaining the angular part of wave functions, b) calculation of the radial part of wave functions by means of a parametrized central potential, c) evaluation of the second-order effects on transition probabilities by means of the effective-operators formalism. All the corrections appear to be significant and the agreement between calculated and observed transition probabilities and lifetimes is as good as possible in view of the precision and the dispersion of experimental data.
