Abstract

Dibre Hamme\orot (‘Words of the Luminaries’) is a collection of prayers for the days of the week, ending with the Sabbath. 1 The six weekday prayers vary from day to day in details of content, but are alike in form and genre. They are all communal supplications motivated by historical recollections. Their basic structure is as follows: Title with date formula, for example, ‘[Prayer on the] Fourth Day’. Introduction - the opening words, zekhor \adonay (‘Remember, Lord’) formulate a request for God to recall a divine attribute or action. Historical prologue - a lengthy and detailed recitation of specific historical events. Petition - a request for physical deliverance (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday) or spiritual strengthening in the observance of the Law (Sunday, Thursday). 2 Concluding benediction - a formal benediction praising God for the action requested in the petition. Response - Amen, amen.
