Abstract
Giant g shifts have been observed in the ESR of Gd substituting the Tm or Pr in the metallic Van Vleck paramagnets TmSb, TmBi, PrSb, PrBi, and PrTe. These shifts were interpreted in terms of exchange interaction between the spin part of the Gd ions and that of the host rare-earth ions. We found this exchange interaction to be always negative, consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering occurring in the singlet-ground-state system TbSb. The occurrence of magnetic ordering in singlet-ground-state systems is discussed in view of our results.
