Abstract
The main objective of this chapter is to propose that discourse-based approaches to second language teaching and learning should be central to the process of enabling learners to become competent and efficient users of a new language. While learning another language, students need to develop discourse skills in that language; to function in new contexts and in new interpersonal relations; and to attend to linguistic, cultural, and social factors that may be completely unfamiliar. Modern language pedagogy is constantly searching for new ways to facilitate this developmental process; this chapter discusses a framework designed to serve this aim.
