Abstract

Nazar, Polanyi and Skrlac have recently suggested that there are two distinct mechanisms for the formation of HCl in the H + ICl reaction. We show that their measured energy disposal leads to information-theoretic branching fractions of 0.21 and 0.79 (the directly measured experimental values are 0.18 and 0.82), and consider the possibility that the less probable path corresponds to the formation of HCl accompanied by an electronically excited (I(2P 1 2) iodine atom.
