Abstract

The study of 16th century Jerusalem concentrates on three major aspects of production and consumption that had important implications for Jerusalem's industry and commerce. The activities involved in the production and distribution of meat, olive oil (and soap), and bread, concern the produced commodities consumed by the majority of the residents. The focus is on the major guilds of butchers, soap-producers and dealers, millers and bakers, describing and analysing their production methods, prices and measures, and the services they provided for the local population. In addition, their economic ties with neighbouring villages, as well as their social background and interrelations are discussed. There are subject, geographical, and personal names indexes. -after Author
