Effect of Active and Ultraviolet-irradiated Inactive Vaccinia Virus on the Development of Shay Leukemia in Rats

Abstract

Intravenous inoculation of large doses of active and ultraviolet-irradiated, inactive vaccinia virus caused a lethal effect in rats. Smaller doses which had no apparent ill effect influenced the otherwise always fatal course of tumor development in rats given inoculations of the chloroleukemia of Shay. Both active and inactive virus preparations given 11 days after the inoculation of the leukemic cells prevented the appearance of tumors in a significant percentage of the animals and led to a prolongation of the survival time in others. A destructive effect of active and inactive vaccinia virus preparations on leukemic cells in vitro was also observed.
