Abstract
The effect of ouabain implantation on urine volume and concentration was studied in the rat. Implantation of ouabain into the lateral hypothalamus depressed water intake but under water deprivation the urine volume was increased and urine osmolality was decreased, compared to control rats. Implantation of ouabain into the medial hypothalamus did not affect water consumption, urine volume or concentration. Implantation of ouabain into the lateral hypothalamus in adrenalectomised rats depressed water intake but under water deprivation urine volume was increased and osmolality was decreased. These findings may suggest that ouabain implantation into the lateral hypothalamus depressed osmoreceptors. The similarity of the effect of ouabain implantation to that of continuous illumination in the rat is discussed.
