Abstract

The effect of the chitin synthetase inhibitor polyoxin D on morphogenesis of Arthrobotrys oligospora was studied in relation to formation of adhesive traps and formation of hyphal coils around other fungi. At concentrations of 0·02 – 0·2 g ml−1, trap formation was increased but colony extension was unaffected. There was swelling of trap cells and cells of germ tubes. Increased trap formation is believed to be due to weakening of cell walls of young hyphae. No significant effect on the coiling of A. oligospora hyphae around those of Rhizoctonia solani was observed. Higher concentrations (> 2 g ml−1) affected linear growth of R. solani more than that of A. oligospora. In all cases the polyoxin D effect was dependent on the medium used.
