Abstract
(Some, but not all, monosaccharides evoke a “Stimulus” which elicits, a. melanophore reaction; b. contraction of the normal rat ileal smooth muscle and c. contraction of the potassium depolarised rat ileal smooth muscle. Oleate, palmitate. aspartate, glutamate and Krebs cycle intermediates are not stimulants. We propose a working hypothesis, according to which the stimulatory effect of sugars mediates an increased supply of ADP, whilst simultaneously decreasing the glycolysis and thus the supply of cell membrane NADH.
