Abstract
For fuel economy of motor vehicles among other factors the efficiency of gears should be improved. Because of a high sliding velocity hypoid gears, which are often used as axle gears, show lower efficiency than spur gears. A significant parameter influencing the efficiency is the lubricant. To determine the influence of this parameter a new test method was developed at the Gear Research Laboratory (Technical University Munich), by which the power loss of a standardized pair of hypoid gears can be measured directly. The test procedure is controlled by a computer.
