Abstract

The atomic-beam method has been used to study the Stark effect in the resonance lines of indium (6s S122→5p P122, 4102) and thallium (7s S122→6p P122, 3776). The difference between the atomic polarizability of the S122 state and that of the P122 state [Δα(sp)] has been determined and compared with calculations in the Coulomb approximation. For indium, we find Δα(sp)=138(11)×10-24 cm-3 and for thallium Δα(sp)=115(12)×10-24 cm3.
