Abstract
The operation of electro-optical modulator based on intersubband transitions in a coupled quantum wells (QWs) structure is demonstrated. Both electroabsorption and electroretardation contribute to the modulation and give rise to a change in the amplitude and the state of polarization of the infrared light. In addition to the dc-Stark effect, a significant contribution to the modulation comes from broadening of the intersubband transitions with the increasing electric field.
