Abstract

A relation between the error in the energy of the ground state of helium and the mean value of r₁₂^-1 when these quantities are evaluated with certain approximate wave functions, has been noted by Coulson and Neilson and discussed by Robinson. Their results are here extended to more general variational wave functions, and to other atoms and ions.
