Abstract
This introductory chapter presents the right of children to participation, set out by the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and provides some baseline perceptions that prepare the ground for the book’s chapters. It considers the main objections that are typically raised against the participation right of children, as well as its multifaceted virtues–its psychological, educational and developmental benefits for children themselves, as well as its social, political, and utilitarian value for families, decision-makers, and communities. The second half of the chapter provides a detailed outline of the book.
