Abstract

Cross sections for the excitation by the (p, n) reaction of isobaric analogue states in residual nuclei have been measured at 30 and 50 MeV. An analysis of the results has been performed in terms of a macroscopic (t · T) potential. The results favour a complex potential whose real part has a surface-peaked form. A purely real potential of magnitude given by proton scattering data fits the shape but not the absolute values of the experimental results. The results from some nuclei have also been analysed in terms of a microscopic description of the interaction and reasonable fits obtained using a Yukawa interaction with a range of 0.8 fm.
