Abstract

Fifty years ago Avraham Stern broke with the Revisionist movement and the Irgun, creating the Irgun Zvai Leumi in Israel, which later became Lechi (The Fighters for the Freedom of Israel). The Stern Group, of which Yitzhak Shamir was a member, was an avant- garde underground movement which espoused revolutionary violence as a means of driving out the British from Mandatory Palestine. To this end, Stern advocated alliances with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, albeit before the reality of the Shoah was apparent. Stern met his end in 1942, when he was shot by a member of the British CID.
