Abstract

Stimulated by new experimental information about the low temperature phases of TTF-TCNQ we investigated the Landau free energy (LFE) which also includes fourth order interaction terms both between similar and different chains. This LFE accounts both for the appearance of the new "2a" phase at T<30K and P∼5Kbar and the merging of the second Peierls transition with the first order incommensurate-commensurate transition. The role of the frustration which arises from the dependence of the LFE on the phases of the order parameters is analyzed and it is shown that a finite fourth order interaction term is necessary to stabilize the "4a" commensurate phase.
