Abstract
The Arabidopsis genome contains multiple genes encoding FtsH proteases. The products of seven of them, FtsH1, FtsH2, FtsH5, FtsH6, FtsH7, FtsH8, and FtsH9, are targeted to the thylakoid membrane, where some of them assemble into hexameric complexes that are essential for proper chloroplast development and the maintenance of the photosynthetic machinery.
