Abstract
Challenging the dogma: The textbook model for activation of heterotrimeric G proteins is reexamined in this minireview. Subunit dissociation has only been demonstrated directly for transducin. Other G proteins may remain closely associated in multiprotein complexes, with activation involving a conformational change.
