Abstract
GABA and its analogues were shown to stimulate the rabbit corneal endothelial fluid pump in the micromolar range. GABA increases the rate of fluid pumping when added to the basic salt solution. The stimulation was abolished by bicuculline and chlorpromazine. The efficacy of GABA and the survival time markedly increased in the presence of insulin and glucose, in presumably physiological concentrations. Complete reversal and survival up to 8 hours is obtained by GABA-glucose-insulin combination, whereas the glutathione-glucose-insulin combination is not efficient.
