Abstract
Review of two books: Germany and Israel: Whitewashing and Statebuilding by Daniel Marwecki (London: Hurst & Company, 2020), 274 Pages;
West Germany and Israel:
Foreign Relations, Domestic Politics, and the Cold War, 1965–1974 by Carole Fink (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2019), 368 Pages
Diplomatic relations between Israel and West Germany were officially established in 1965. The path leading to the exchange of ambassadors, however, had been paved by the 1952 reparation agreement and subsequent covert military ties. While today the two countries are seen as good friends that cooperate closely on myriad levels, the history of this unique and asymmetrical relationship continues to be scrutinized by historians, political scientists, and journalists alike. The two books under review here complement one another in terms of the periods they cover. Nevertheless, they could not be more different with regard to style, substance, and intent.
