Gods in Love: A Critical Edition and Analysis of the 'Divine Love Lyrics'

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

The Divine Love Lyrics is a collection of around 50 cuneiform texts from 1st millennium BCE Assyria and Babylonia, documenting a religious festival centered on Babylon's principal deities: Marduk, his consort Zarpanitu, and his lover, Istar of Babylon. The texts feature poetic amorous dialogues and bold sexual descriptions, interwoven with detailed ritual instructions. This exceptional corpus provides a unique insight into the interplay of religion, literature, and ritual in the later phase of the ancient Mesopotamian culture.
