Abstract

The anaerobic moderately halophilic bacteria Haloanaerobium praevalens (DSM 2228)and Halobacteroides halobius (ATCC 35273) were characterized by 16S ribosomal RNA oligonucleotide cataloging. The strains appeared to be related to each other, but, though clearly belonging to the Eubacteria, not to be specifically related to any of the previously recognized subgroups within the Eubacteria. We propose to classify both genera in a new family, the Haloanaerobiaceae.
