Abstract
This chapter explores concepts from Jewish theology and traditions relevant to the spiritual dimensions of palliative care. The chapter is based on the view of Judaism as a holistic way of life that guides ethical perspectives and practical decisions, including in healthcare contexts. The chapter explores the sanctity of life principle in Judaism, rooted in the Jewish concept of Pikuach-Nefesh (a Hebrew term that means ‘saving a soul’), which emphasises preserving and saving life. This concept guides medical ethics and care for the terminally ill. Other key topics in this chapter include the caring for body and soul, visiting the sick, end-of-life rituals, grief, and bereavement customs. The chapter highlights the possible contribution of Jewish teachings to patient-centred palliative services, emphasising the infinite value of human life while accepting death as a natural part of existence. Integration of these ideas and the Jewish view of the soul’s journey at life’s end, guided by contemplative rituals, prayers, and community, can pave the way to respectful end-of-life care that enables connection to the divine while easing suffering.
