Abstract
The structure of ultra-thin films of lead is found to depend critically on type and temperature of substrate. In particular, an abnormal, metastable phase of lead is obtained under specified conditions. Diffraction patterns of this phase conform to a DHCP structure with nearest-neighbour distance 2% higher than in bulk lead.
