Abstract
The present paper concerns the nature of the hydrophobic bindings of tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium-(II) (Ru(bpy)3 2+) and methyl viologen (MV2+) to Nafion. The investigations involved steady-state emission measurements of Ru(bpy)3 2+ in Nafion aqueous solutions and the effects of both quenchers and chemically inert ions. The exchange of MV2+ with Mg2+ and with Ru(bpy)3 2+ ions in the Nafion domain was studied at various solutes concentrations. The results show extraordinarily strong hydrophobic bindings of Ru-(bpy)3 2+ (ΔG° = −7.8 kcal/mol) and MV2+ (ΔG° = −4.7 kcal/mol) to the Nafion. However, no specific hydrophobic regions with well-defined boundaries seem to be involved.
