Abstract

The solubility, free energy, entropy, and enthalpy of solution of methane, ethane, n-butane, benzene, and biphenyl were determined in light and heavy water. The hydrophobic interaction between the pairs methane-methane, ethane-ethane, and benzene-benzene were computed in these two liquids. It was found that the strength of the hydrophobic interaction for the first two pairs is larger in H2O than in D2O. The order seems to be reversed for the pair benzene-benzene.
