Abstract

Two major mechanisms have been proposed that explain the behavior of most phase-transfer-catalyzed reactions initiated by the hydroxide ion (PTC/OH- systems), the interfacial mechanism,1 and the extraction mechanism.2,3 Several PTC/OH- reactions are believed to proceed through alternative mechanisms such as certain dehydrohalogenations and hydrolysis reactions.
