Abstract

Mössbauer studies of extremely dilute 153Eu in SmM2(M = Fe, Co, Ni) yield the magnetic hyperfine fields [- 1090(20), - 1250(20), - 450(100) kOe] and electric field gradients [1.40(10) × 1018, 1.35(10) × 1018, ≁0 V/cm2) acting on the Eu nuclei. From these, the exchange fields acting on the Eu3+ ions were found to be μBHexch/k = 105(10), 100(10) and 15(2) K.
