Abstract

Proposes an appropriate index for the measurement of the income level of trade flows, and points out some of the attributes of the findings indicated by this measure. Then explores the issue of similarity versus dissimilarity in the structure of exports and imports, and examines the income levels of exports and imports in the light of, and used as a partial test of, existing theories of the trade pattern. Next, building on the indexes of income level of the traded goods, attention is paid to the income level of trade flows of countries. Finally, the total income represented in trade flows, rather than per capita income levels, are measured and explored. -Author
