Abstract
A method is proposed whereby a glass laser rod doped by Nd3+ or by a transition-metal ion Cr3+ or Mn2+ is covered by an envelope of highly fluorescent dyes emitting in the maximum absorption band of the ion. Radiation emitted from the dye is trapped in the glass rod by multiple reflections and absorbed by the ion. The efficiency of absorption is increased due to increase of photon density.
