Abstract
This chapter provides an overview on the chemistry of ink formulations applied in inkjet printing. The aim is to reveal and to break down the complex nature of inkjet ink formulations, including ink design and ink manufacturing as well as ink application. Inkjet printing is a highly advanced technical process setting specific chemical and physicochemical requirements for ink formulations that are used in the printing process. We will cover the fundamentals of ink formulations by classification and discussion of individual components of ink formulations. Different ink types with selected examples of ink formulations based on patents and their field of application are introduced. We discuss several chemical and physicochemical ink parameters and their influence on jetting and printing performance as well as the influence on the interaction with the substrate. Next to established graphic applications, this chapter will also consider innovative functional ink formulations for new markets such as printed electronics.
