Abstract
The authors point out that Bely's approximation (1967) for exchange in excitation cross sections by electronic collisions is equivalent to considering a contact interaction between free and bound electrons. This allows us to obtain the corresponding formula for relativistic wavefunctions and for many-electron atoms and to discuss the quality of the approximation.
