Abstract
Haemorrhage within the villous stroma occurs in early stages of an acute hypoxic event most often in second and early third trimester. Most cases are observed in association with abruption or recent infarcts, and therefore, this phenomenon is observed more often in disorders underlying maternal vascular malperfusion, but is not pathognomonic of these disorders. It can also be observed in cases with a severe ascending intrauterine infection. Microscopic features depend on the underlying disorder.
