Abstract

The large body of countries, peoples and cultures grouped under the heading of Islam very often defies a uniform definition regarding its true substance. All too often comparative notes on Islam in different cultures are drawn mechanically, as if individual countries were parts of a large machine where the whole is of merely the sum total of its parts.
