Abstract

Isothermal growth of β-barium metaborate (β-BBO) single crystals has been achieved in a top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) configuration with continuous feeding. Almost inclusion-free cylindrical crystals of up to 45 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length have been grown at a rate of 1 mm/day. Viscosity values for a large set of temperatures and compositions of the BBO-Na2O solutions have been determined experimentally to obtain the exact viscosity data along the liquidus line. The optical quality of the crystals has been examined by a variety of methods, including optical and electron microscopy and nonlinear optical measurements involving evaluation of the second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency.
