Abstract

This chapter describes the gap through means of a detailed examination of the ways in which US policy are affected by various groups and factors operating within the American political system. It analyses a number of new developments and shifts in attitudes towards Israel and examines the question of whether Israel is in a position to manipulate various groups. New ideological groups have emerged within the Jewish community that exhibit new attitudes towards various Israeli policies, especially with regard to the solution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The social, demographic, and ideological processes just described have weakened the traditional ties between the organized American Jewish community and the state of Israel. The Israeli problem in the sphere is how to transform fundamentalist sympathy into political influence. Israel's development of various weapon systems and its achievements in the field of medical instrumentation, for example, caused a certain amount of apprehension and negative reaction in US circles.
