Abstract

S and DS have both been found to be toxic to the organ of Corti in guinea pigs, primarily causing AP depression, with CM depression appearing only upon the administration of much higher doses. S seems to be slightly more toxic than DS. Differences in the relative permeabilities to S and DS of the various inner ear membranes, as also species differences in this relative permeability may explain some of the controversial observations concerning the ototoxic nature of these two drugs.
