Abstract

We show that widely used method of spectrum calculation in heterostructures based on effective mass approximation in each separate layer gives wrong results for the in-plane spectrum. We develop a new approach that is effective mass approximation in the growth direction and kp method for the whole structure for the in-plane spectrum. This approach is demonstrated for single infinite quantum well and double well structure.
