Abstract
Benno Jacob was not only an important critic of Julius Wellhausen's literary-historical reading of the bible, he also opposed his treatment of more general theological themes. For example, he pointed to the symbolic language of the Bible, argued that biblical law is a «true practical gospel» and followed the Torah in characterizing it as divine revelation. This can be demonstrated by a review of his published and unpublished works.
