Abstract
Despite the growing importance of study of diffusion of innovation in science more generally, there has been little interest in such inquiries in research on the police. We use American police innovation in the last decades of the 20th century as a case study for applying the diffusion of innovation paradigm to understanding police innovation. We argue that the paths of police innovation can be explained in the context of the critiques that developed of standard policing models. More generally, our work reinforces the idea that the diffusion of innovation paradigm is an important one for understanding the development of police organization and strategies.
