Abstract
Labeling, the relationship between a physical carrier of a linguistic entity and the object to which it is attached, is discussed. The discussion draws attention to some of the problems underlying this relationship and offers several guidelines for its interpretation. It is concluded that the interpretation of labels is an interactive process involving an overall evaluation of the situation at hand. The process bears on semantic, pragmatic and para-linguistic factors.
