Abstract
Lessing's parable of the rings seems to promise an education of mankind, which has never materialized. Since it was written, the famous text has often been used as a substitute for a non-existent German-Jewish cultural history. In order to make its contradictions more comprehensible, a subtext underlying the parable is considered. The parable is read with the help of Sigmund Freud, in the light of Totem and Taboo: in a hermeneutics of suspicion.
