Abstract

The cluster compounds Nb6I11 and HNb6I11 exhibit a coupled structural and electronic phase transition. The structural deformation is accompanied by a crossing of electronic levels which leads to a reduction of the spin degeneracy. We expect such level-crossing transitions to occur in other compounds containing transition-metal clusters.
