Abstract

Representatives of several insect and mite orders feed on and burrow in lichens, such feeding at times inducing the formation of galls. The resistance of lichens to invertebrate grazers is attributed to specific lichen compounds, to the gelatinous covering of certain lichens, and to the presence of chelating agents in these plants. Some arthropods shelter in lichens, the animals at times mimicking the plants. Lichen propagules are disseminated by certain arthropods. Lichen populations and their dependent arthropodsare undergoing changes in abundance and distribution as a result of nuclear fall-out and air pollution. These associations are discussed and some pertinent research areas are suggested.
