Abstract
Long range transportation (LRT) of air pollutants from the West towards Israel was studied. In particular, the sulfate and nitrate content in the LRT air masses was evaluated. Results showed that the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, particularly Israel, is significantly affected by relatively high levels of sulfate and nitrate particulate. These findings agreed with results of model simulations using a regional atmospheric system linked to a dispersion/transport model. The model simulations indicated very efficient transportation of air masses heavy with air pollutants from Europe to the Middle East region during the summer months. The main paths of LRT were ascertained, one through the Aegean Sea and the other via western and central Mediterranean. Transportation takes 2-4 days, allowing the pollutants to affect large distances downwind from the pollution sources.
