N2 - Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of foils of dilute Au : Er alloys at helium temperatures showed that annealing at 400 C produces significant changes in the EPR lineshape. It was found that these changes are due to the existence of a near-surface layer which has properties different from those of the bulk. A theory developed for the EPR lineshape permitted the interpretation of the experimental results in terms of a combined resonance from the near-surface layer and from the bulk.
